How To Publish Your Own Book

Obtaining a Quotation

The first step of the publishing process is to obtain a written quotation. To request an online quotation for your book, click here or call us toll free at 1-866-944-2999.

Editing

Your book should be properly edited before submitting it for printing. Many authors choose to have a friend or family member who is qualified do the book editing. A second option is to hire a student from a local community college or university to do the editing. A third option is to hire a professional editor. Although we do not offer an editing service, we do refer qualified editors upon request. An important rule in editing is as the author of the book, you should never do the final edit. If there are mistakes, you probably won’t catch all your own mistakes, no matter how many times you proofread your manuscript.

Page Layout

Page layout is the term which describes the way in which text is situated on a page. A page layout which contain no photographs, tables/ charts, bullets, or index (otherwise known as a basic layout) can be created by our designers at no additional charge if you choose. If your page layout is not a basic layout, we would be able to provide a quotation to have our designers create your page layout.

If you are creating your own page layout, the next step is to adjust the page layout of your book. The page layout of your book should be adjusted to look exactly the way it should for printing. This includes choosing the font for the text and headers, as well as the margin size and location of the page numbers. This is something that you can do yourself using a basic computer and software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, or Adobe InDesign (to name a few). For a step-by-step guide to creating your own book page layout, click here or call us toll free 1-866-944-2999 to speak directly with a layout specialist.

Cover Design

Eighty percent of all books are sold based on the cover design alone. The cover design is the single most important marketing tool used to sell your book. It is for this reason that we provide a professional custom book cover design at no additional charge. If you have illustrations or photographs you would like to include in your book cover design, our designers will incorporate these images into your cover design.

How To Submit Your Files For Printing

  • Files may be submitted in a variety of ways. The most common is by regular email (for files under 5 megabytes in size). Our email address for file submissions is admin@artbookbindery.com. Files larger than 5 megabytes (usually containing photographs) can be sent using our ftp site. An ftp site is a simple way to transfer large files quickly and easily. To send your files by ftp, click here. Files may also be copied to a disk and sent to our location.
  • It may be necessary to print out one copy of your book from your computer's printer. A printed copy is usefull when submitting a Microsoft Word file. We use the printout you provide to compare with the files stored on the disk to ensure the files were not altered in any way while transferring from your computer system to ours. A printed copy is not necessary when sending a PDF file. PDF is an acronym for "Portable Document Format". Once a file has been into a PDF, it can be opened on any computer without problems such as text or photograph shifting. You can create your own PDF file with the proper software. For a free download of PDF software, click here. If you should have questions regarding dowloading or using the pdf software, please call us toll free at 1-866-944-2999.

  • You may provide a short biography (approx.100 words) and good quality photograph of yourself. If supplied, your photograph and short biography will be incorporated into the design of the back cover of your book at no additional cost.
  • You may supply good quality artwork or photo image to be incorporated into the book cover design by our graphic designers. This may be in the form of a photograph, negative, print, or high-resolution scanned image (300-600 dpi).

    Reviewing Your Book Manuscript Submission

The following is a checklist of items to be sent as part of your submission.

    · Your book manuscript file

    · A short biography of the author for the back cover of the book (Optional)
    · A photo of the author for the back cover of the book (Optional)
    · Cover artwork (Optional)
